The Indian Hume Pipe Co. Ltd. (IHP) — manufacturer of hume pipes and allied products — is acquiring a customized ERP to cater to critical data exchanges and is also evaluating a vendor for establishing network connectivity.

Speaking to CXOtoday, Unni Krishna, deputy manager-systems, informed, “To address the critical information needs of all locations, we have decided to go for a customized integrated ERP with all necessary functionalities, which will be implemented over a period of six months from now.”

Initially, for six months the company would roll out the financial and material module on a pilot basis. Later all the modules will be deployed across the 20 odd locations of the company countrywide. Krishna also informed that the company would soon begin the evaluation process for the selection of a network service provider. Says Krishna, “We would go for IP based VPN connectivity and at the moment we are evaluating vendors for the same.”

Elaborating on the need for an integrated but customized ERP as compared to a leading packaged brand, Krishna said, “Our enterprise is spread over multiple locations, and we have a broad product range, which has necessitated an integrated ERP that would provide analysis of data on a realtime basis. In addition, we would be able to reduce the time delay in data exchanges (that was earlier done through e-mails followed by compilation of data). Moreover, the integrated approach would also allow transparency in the processes involved in the production of goods.”

On the debate over ’readily deployable ERPs’ versus custom-built solutions, Krishna feels that a customized application provides the flexibility in devising solutions for the actual need, which a branded ERP can’t. Moreover, he explained that the customized ERP purchased costs 35% less than a standard branded ERP. Pune based Abweb Infotech is customizing the ERP for Indian Hume Pipes Ltd.

The browser based ERP will run on .Net platform and interact with MS SQL2003 database. Now at the testing phase, the company is using one server and there are plans to go for purchase of more hardware as the technology deployment takes off fully.

The company was established in 1926 with the object of manufacturing, popularising and marketing hume pipes and allied products. Over a period of time it has majored in prestressed concrete & cylinder pipes and railway sleepers, bar wrapped steel cylinder pipes, hume steel pipes and some turnkey water supply projects.
