IITians Develop Linux-Based Cell Phone Tracking Software
Did you ever wish that you could track the location of a mobile user? Well, this could very well be a reality largely thanks to the efforts of three young Mumbai-based IITians, who have developed a Linux-based software application that tracks the location of mobile phones.
Speaking to CXOtoday Nitin Seth, director of Mobiance Technologies, said, “This software is an enhanced version of cell display info. A customer can track a user by sending an SMS. The service provider will then ask the tracked user permission via SMS. If the tracked user consents, the customer is then flashed with the location details of the tracked user. The accuracy can be within 10 to 100 metres”
“The software works on other network parameters such as orientation of the sector antenna, broadcast signals of various stations. We are in the process of procuring a GIS-based database,” added Seth.
The tracked mobile user has three options and may give permission for one-time usage or unlimited access. Though the third option allows the tracked mobile user to deny access it will not be a permanent one. The same service can also be accessed through the Internet.
Apart from parents who want to track the movements of their children, the software also helps corporates to track their on-field employees.
Sharing the technical details, Nikhilesh Ghushe, CTO of Mobiance Technologies said, “Developed on Fedora Core 2 approximately 10K lines of codes were written. The entire development took around five months. The SMS interface as well as the Web interface has been developed.”
Revealing the inspiration behind the development, Ghushe recalled, “Around a year back while working on a project campus, we wanted to develop a GPS-based solution. But the cost factor proved a deterrent. It was then that we decided to develop a cost-effective solution.”
“Why is a mobile called a cell phone?” asked Ghushe. “Its because each antenna has a cell. Cellid is a technology, which identifies which antenna is seeing your mobile. We have named our technology enhanced Cellid, because this technology has been optimized,” asserted Ghushe.
Service provider Airtel provided a platform for the IIT trio to test their software, which was demonstrated at the recently concluded Mood Indigo festival on a sample crowd of 300 cell phone subscribers.
According to an Airtel spokesperson, “Depending on regulatory conditions of the country we are ready to offer this service.”
Mobiance Technologies that develops location-based services (LBS) products for corporate and mobile network operators was launched three months back by Seth, Ghushe and Mandeep Singh - CEO of Mobiance. All three had passed out of IIT Bombay last year.

It pricks me when every moment in Nigeria users of mobile phones lodge complaints of phone stealing and snatching. Some of these theft cases are at gun or armed point.
Favorable areas for the crime are isolated/lonely areas, rowdy bus stop, night period especially poorly lighted and isolated environment/roads etc. these are sold through crime abaters. The latest is that they have employed the techniques of removing the SIM card once the phone has been snatched or stolen. The SIM is either discarded or destroyed and the phone sold to grey marketers, who work in collaboration with the criminals, even when the phone has been locked, there are teams of local engineers who are criminals to unlock the phone before it is sold at a merely meager amount in form of “auction”, “give away” or “fairly used”.
The rightful owners who now loose their phones and service SIM card are faced with the problem of obtaining affidavit of loss of such items. Police extracts of loss of items and reporting the case to the phone service providers. The financial discomfort of paying a reclaim fee for another SIM card and that of procuring a new phone hand set etc.
However, I do not know if this happens in other continents e.g. Asia, Europe, and America e.t.c. Frankly speaking, nearly every hour of the day passes by without complaints of a mobile phones being stolen or snatched in one part of a city in most parts of Nigeria.
With this rampant snatching or stealing of mobile phones, the high technological use of it to commit crimes e.g. monitoring the law enforcement agents (police, SSS, etc) and going out Scot free, I feel absolutely bordered as a student of electronics.
I have a feeling that “there must be a way out” or “there must be a way forward to curb this menace. Engineering is never and has never been static”. It is always advancing. There has always been provision for further research, modifications and new inventions; I believe the bedrock of research is still applicable to this problem at stack.
At this juncture I am appealing that this problem should be considered seriously and a conducive solution provided by:
a. manufacturers of mobile phone sets
b. providers of mobile phone services
c. internet service providers and
d. computer programmers
I hereby wish to suggest that each of this group should as a matter of fact work as a team and see that:
a. A software programme is developed for registering all mobile phones in the internet web sites and WAP (mobile phone service providerÂ’s web sites.
b. The software programme should be such that once a phone has been registered using brand name, model number and serial number, it can detect signals from the phone and the line number once in use with a SIM Card and the line number currently in use will thus be detected and displayed on the web or WAP sites.
c. The web site account should have a provision for username and password used in accessing the account and the current SIM card and line number in the by a registered phone.
d. It should also have a provision for the detailed profile of the person who first register this phone. To access, or edit the profile of the person or phone details, one must provide or recall the secret questions and answer registered on opening the account.
e. There should be a search engine in the programme which can recover and display the current SIM and line number in use with the mobile phone being searched for, once the brand name, model number and serial number is logged (or provided) in the search engine.
f. The programme should be such that can detect and log all calls made or received per day, the direction (location) of each call and the nearest antenna (relay mask) used to relay the signals during making/receiving calls. These details should only be deleted manually after 72 to 100 hours of log. It should only be automatically deleted after seven (7) days if not manually performed by the owner if not manually.
g. The manufacturers should make a policy that all mobile phones manufactured into the market must contain a “security awareness pack” or “surveillance pack”. This pack should contain details on how to register the mobile phone soon after purchase of the phone and SIM card and a tracking card for recording the information so registered in the appropriate web site. The web site available for such registration etc, should not be left out
h. The programme should not exclude a provision for mobile phones in use, which has audio-visual communication services. In the configuration of mobile phones with VIaccess (micro-chip camera included), an emergency button has to be included in the mobile phone. A facility or programme which allow automatic snapping and storing of photographs in the internet (or WAP) web page it has been registered for security surveillance. This facility must be configured in such a manner that it must be swung into action once the emergency button has been switched on and the phone flicked open.
In conclusion it will be a thing of great joy to the world if a security/surveillance alert system is developed to ease tracking of a mobile phone once it is snatched or stolen and put into use by another person whether it is re-registered or not. It will also ease tracking of criminals who use it to commit crimes (for e.g. in cases of political thugery, assassination, armed robbery etc where the criminals use it to contact the assassinated before assassination or before launching an armed robbery attack on their targeted subject) loosing lines and phones sets, how to reclaim or purchase of another (lines and or phones), or how to deactivate the line account to avoid its further use by the criminals or their counterparts will be minimized or if possible a thing of the past. Also how to track criminals who use this medium to ease their nepherous activities will be highly facilitated (as it is done with amateur activities).
Thus:
1. Mobile phone manufacturers e.g. Motorola, Nokia, Ascom, Hudges, Sony, etc should please come up with a policy that all mobile phone produced and put into appropriate use soon after purchase must be logged or registered on the appropriate and available web site of choice which has the facility and ability to detect and display the SIM card company name (service providers name) and the Puk or line number currently in use with the mobile phone set.
The manufacturers should make this feasible by making their phones with a programme which transmits the brand name, model number, and serial number into such web site, the equipment has been registered. This shall be made possible via a programme from the phone service providers SIM card. Therefore when an account has been created in a particular website, soon as a username and password is log-in, such details already registered shall be displayed (i.e. the brand name, model number, serial number, allocated frequency of SIM card and the line or PUK number)
Soon after the search engine button is activated, it displays the SIM card service name and phone number in use. Also in a situation where the phone number only is provided, the search engine shall display the allocated frequency of such a SIM card, the calls made and or received by the user of such a phone, the name and address of such a user, the allocation of such user when calls were made/received and the nearest antenna (relay mask) used by the user in addition to the details stated earlier (brand name, model number, serial number, etc).
2. Mobile phone service providers e.g. Nextel, Thuraya, MTN, Globacom, Econet, etc should come up with a programme that detects and displays the basic phone details discussed in No 1 above.
It should be a rule that once a SIM pack is purchased, before access is allowed on its use, the full name, address of the purchaser, the receipt number, date of issue must be provided on the WAP special form, for easy identification. Access to these details should be use of password and username. To transfer ownership of the phone and SIM card, the secret question and answer given on the first day of opening this account, must be provided before a form is displayed for a new profile to be completed.
A WAP web site with search engine for searching lost phones and or SIM cards/retrieving the identity or details on how to track a caller.
Such changes in a phone or SIM card must be detected and logged in a web site where any of the two or both phone informations have been registered.
This should be capable of searching and displaying the details required once the basic details are provided or part of the details are provided (e.g. brand name, phone number, serial number, model number etc) or once only the phone number is logged into the search engines column provided for such a purpose. This will be such that automatically search and retrieve the SIM card allocated frequency, phone number, etc in use with a particular phone whose details have been provided including the location of the phone as at when it last made or received calls.
3. Internet service providers e.g. America online Prodigy CompuServe etc should come up with web sites for registering the mobile phone sets by the owners soon after procurement. It should be a programme which has the ability to detect a change in SIM card and line number ever used or current line still in use with the phone set. It should also contain a log book for logging all calls made and or received, the location of the phone as at when it was last in use called and received numbers and the nearest antenna used. There should be an alert text message provided to alert the owner once the phone is put to use. Soon after steal or soon as a new SIM card is inserted and its use commenced. This is to enable the first owner know the new SIM card number etc in operation
4. Computer programmers are not left out in this great assignment. Microsoft, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera etc should design a programme for this job that allows access to the computer and vice versa.
