India Soon To Be Hooked On SaaS, Says Research

IT market research firm, Springboard Research has come out with a new study, which identifies India as the place to be for all the vendors hawking their services on the Software as a Service (SaaS) model.

According to the study titled, ‘The Software as a Service Market in Asia Pacific, 2005 to 2008: Blazing New Routes-to-Market’, Indian market in comparison to the rest of APAC region showed a stronger bent for SaaS based approach as far as adoption levels were concerned. India saw revenues increase over 53% to $7 million last year with expectations of further growth to $48 million by 2008.

The increasing interest in SaaS has been attributed to factors such as budding Indian SMB segment, growth of broadband infrastructure and penetration of Internet among SMBs, significant cost benefits, easy manageability and associated business benefits among others.

Though web conferencing and collaboration currently represents the largest portion (43%) of the total SaaS revenue in India, other software market sectors such as ERP, Supply Chain Management, and Human Resources applications are also beginning to explore the realm of SaaS, said the study.

As far as the vendors are concerned Indian software providers are also gradually beginning to enter the SaaS marketplace which by large continues to be dominated by North American players.

SaaS is an emerging software delivery model where application software is delivered remotely through a subscription-based fee as opposed being sold for perpetual use.
