Leading database company MongoDB has appointed IT veteran Dev Ittycheria as President and CEO. Max Schireson, the company’s current CEO, will become Vice Chairman and remain with the company full time after transitioning the CEO role, said a company release. MongoDB has e-commerce company Snapdeal and mobile messaging application Hike as its clients in India.

Ittycheria becomes part of the recent trend where some of major IT and Telecom companies have been choosing Indian origin people to lead their business. among them most notable are, Microsoft appointing its its CEO Satya Nadella who is of Indian origin, Finnish telecom major Nokia’s Rajeev Suri as CEO while imaging software leader and Adobe’s Shantanu Narayen.

IT Software veteran Ittycheria was the co-founder and CEO of BladeLogic, one of the fastest growing enterprise software companies of the last decade. After co-founding the business in 2001, he went on to take the company public in 2007, and then sold it to BMC Software in 2008 for approximately $900 million. After the acquisition, he became President of the Enterprise Service Management business at BMC Software, a business with $1.4 billion in annual revenue and over 4,000 employees.

“We are delighted that Dev will be leading the next leg of our amazing growth,” said Dwight Merriman, Chairman and Co-Founder of MongoDB in a statement, adding that Max has built a world-class team that has shipped great software, raised a record amount of money from smart investors, attracted hundreds of great partners and generated millions in revenue from the world’s leading companies. Dev’s skills are a fantastic addition as we continue to grow our leadership in the market.

“The last three years of growth have been spectacular. With Dev joining the team, I am personally excited to be able to focus on customers, partnerships and product strategy,” said Max Schireson, who had been CEO of MongoDB for a year and a few months, assuming the title last January after joining the company in 2011 as president.

Schireson said that he decided to step down because of the toll imposed on him by constant travel between the company’s New York City and Palo Alto headquarters and from customer visits. Spending more time with his family, the outgoing CEO told Forbes in an interview, “is not a euphemism. It’s something I needed to do for my family, and there’s never a convenient time.”

“Dev’s experience and leadership will be a powerful addition to the company as we continue to grow,” Schireson said handing over the mantle to Ittycheria, who is now set to head a company with over $231 million in funding and more than 600 customers including Cisco, MetLife, MTV, among others.

“MongoDB helps companies create entirely new types of business applications, while dramatically accelerating time to market and lowering overall costs. I look forward to scaling what we can do,” Ittycheria said, who brings with him decades of business and technical expertise.
