NetApp Flaunts Its Mid-Range Muscles

Network Appliance, a unified storage solutions company, has announced new mid-range SAN systems, software, and services to underline the company’s enterprise strengths.

Major enhancements include business application uptime, always on file services, automated data protection, storage infrastructure management, and partner software integration.

“Today’s introductions highlight comprehensive solutions for our customers’ data centers. They offer the best performance for midrange SAN, enabling flexibility to adapt to business change, along with the highest availability of application data, and productivity for IT administrators and assets,” said Soumitra Agarwal, marketing director, NetApp India.

“From the FAS3070 and V3070 to our extensive refresh of the NetApp Manageability Software Family, we have poured tremendous innovation into these products. We have made sure that they deliver the highest performance and application uptime at an attractive price. Whether a customer is looking for a powerful SAN for massive performance needs, a midrange SAN or NAS, or an archive, compliance, or backup solution, NetApp has that customer covered with a variety of solutions. EMC and HP should be concerned about it. We just have the better portfolio,” added Agarwal.

The FAS3070 and V3070 storage systems are aimed at the midrange. They offer scalability to 252TB, superior application-level availability, and support for unified storage with both 4Gb FC SAN and 10GbE iSCSI. It also encompasses industry-leading NAS functionality, offering an edge over the EMC CLARiiON CX3-80, and exceeding the scalability and capability of HP’s StorageWorks EVA8000.

The FAS3070 also supports an in-place and modular controller upgrade with no data migration, no retraining, and no process changes for customers, who want eventually to move from the FAS3070 to the fully compatible high-end FAS6000 series.

Surajit Sen, national sales manager, NetApp India, said, “The EMC and HP systems necessitate hardware and software “rip-and-replacement” when upgrading to higher capacity storage. NetApp offers a seamless data migration while upgradation.”

On the FC SAN front, NetApp has enhanced multi-path support and 4Gb SAN infrastructure support.

In the business applications arena, it has announced new versions of SnapManager for Oracle and Exchange, which provides data protection and cloning for application environments. Built-in snapshots maintain frequent back-up of data.

To support file migration and file share consolidation, NetApp unveiled a new version of its Virtual File Manager Enterprise Edition and Virtual File Manager Migration Edition.

Encompassing its NetApp Manageability Software Family, it introduced Protection Manager, an automated backup and replication management tool for NetApp disk-to-disk environments. It eliminates time-consuming manual mapping, and helps reduce the costs associated with manually managing secondary and tertiary storage resources.

Finally on the software front, NetApp unveiled CommandCentral Storage by Symantec, which integrates storage resource management (SRM) performance, policy management and provisioning for high-end heterogeneous SAN environments.

Furthermore, it also introduced AutoSupport, its move towards automated and remote support services.
