Online Retailers Battle It Out For Independence Day
With Independence Day around the corner, e-commerce majors in India are engaged in a battle of supremacy, where each one is trying to outdo the other. Online retail majors such as Amazon, Flipkart and Shopclues, like every year, are making multi-billion-dollar investments in their infrastructure as well as in marketing and promotion - offering huge discounts and deals to lure the online shopaholics. At the same time, smaller players in the online commerce space are also leaving no stones unturned as they are set to make the most of their Independence Day deals. The special discount season starts with Rakshabandhan, and peaks with Independence Day.
Amazon’s ‘The Great Indian Sale’
Amazon’s ‘The Great Indian Sale’ that starts from August 9 and ends on August 12, focuses on electronics gadgets and smartphones, as they constitute the largest share of online sales. With offers on gadgets, fashion, large appliances and other segments, Amazon is looking to give competition to Flipkart’s flagship sale. With the ongoing sale, the e-commerce giant is not only looking to bring in new customers, but also plans to reward its existing ones with perks.
Amazon Prime members are being given early access to some of the top deals, along with cashbacks for Amazon Pay and credit or debit card holders of certain banks. There are app-only offers available for a limited period only. The in-app purchase can also get the buyer an all-expenses-paid trip to Bali, while SBI debit and credit card users along with Amazon Pay users will get 15% discount on the overall purchase.
Coming to the deals, the best ones are on smartphones. The etailer is offering upto 35 percent flat discount on iPhones, which includes iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone SE. It is offering Rs. 2000 flat discount on all ‘available’ OnePlus phones andthe same discount on Motorola phones, Rs 5000 on Lenovo phones and 15 percent discount for Coolpad phones.
Televisions, hard disks, and laptops are also available for as much as 40 per cent off, while accessories like headphones and power banks are being offered at lucrative prices. One can also avail 40-45% discount on headphones from Philips, Sony and Skull Candy, whereas 50% discount on headphones from Sennheiser. Bose headphones get 20 percent off. Consumers can avail upto 65 percent flat discount on power banks by Intex and 30 percent discount on power banks by Xiaomi.
Flipkart’s ‘Big Freedom Sale’
Flipkart’s flagship sale, which ends a day before Amazon’s sale, also brings with it great offers to attract consumers. For starters, there is a 10 percent instant discount for users with HDFC credit or debit cards and also interesting exchange offers on phones.
On the products on offer, the biggest discounts again can be found on phones. Flipkart here matches the 32GB iPhone 7’s price on Amazon, but additionally gives users a chance to get up to Rs 15,600 off with its exchange offer. For example, the iPhone 6s 32 GB is also available at a Rs 11,000 discount plus a maximum exchange discount of Rs 15,600 bringing its effective price down to Rs 20,399. Google’s Pixel XL 32GB is being sold at a close to Rs 20,000 discount – Rs 48,999 down from its MRP of Rs 67,000.
There are also discounts on TVs from brands like Sony, Vu, Onida, and Micromax while, laptops, DSLRs, and headphones are also being offered at attractive prices. Big discounts are offered on Moto M and Moto G5 Plus, which will be available respectively for Rs Rs. 12,999 and Rs. 14,999, in other words, it comes at a flat discount of Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively. Further, massive discounts on LED TVs have been observed as well. Products such as 32-inch Sony HD Ready LED Smart, Onida 109 cm (43), LG 260L Frost Free refrigerator can get up to 15-25% flat discounts.

Paytm Mall, run by Paytm E-commerce Pvt. Ltd., launched a week-long sale on Tuesday till August 15 with discounts and cashback offers on a wide range of products, including laptops, mobiles and appliances, apparel and accessories. Paytm is offering up to 80 percent off and Rs 20,000 in cashbacks as part of the sale event, it said in a statement.
As part of the offers, customers can buy Panasonic, Micromax and Vivo smartphones at a minimum of 10 percent cashback, and Apple, HP and Lenovo laptops at up to Rs 20,000 cashback. The Apple MacBook Air 13” is being sold with a flat cashback of Rs. 10,000 at an effective price of Rs 51,990.
For bigger appliances like television and washing machines, Paytm is offering up to Rs 20,000 in cashbacks, while small appliances like mixer grinders and fans will host up to 20 percent cashback, the statement added, noting that the iPhone7 being sold at up to Rs 10,000 cashback while the iPhone SE is being sold at a flat 15 percent discount, with Rs 3,000 cashback to bring the price from Rs 27,200 down to Rs 19,990.
The sale will also see apparels from Allen Solly and U.S. Polo Assn will feature 40% discount and 40 percent cashback. There’s also minimum 70% discount on watches from Titan and Fastrack and luggage from American Tourister and SkyBags will get 30 percent cashback.
In March, the marketplace arm had raised $200 million in a fresh round of funding led by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
According to the Central Statistics Organization (CSO) and International Monetary Fund (IMF), with various positive factions thriving, including that of online retail,India has emerged as the fastest growing economy in the world.
Recently, the country has noted a constructive rise in people venturing out for online retail. The past year’s ecommerce sales were approximately $16 billion with chances of market expanding up to seven times higher, according to Morgan Stanley. Channelized by this robust investment in the sector and swift increase in the number of netizens, reports predict that Indian e-commerce sales are expected to reach $120 billion by 2020 and festivals and special occasions are the best times to testify the growth.
