Generation X and Millennials value fitness, while Generation Z values resilience the most: Great Place To Work India announces India’s Best Workplaces in Health & Wellness 2022

  • Employee Disengagement at work costs an estimated $7.8 trillion each year
  • Indoor & Outdoor Air Pollution responsible for an estimated $8.1 trillion per year in health costs

Great Place To Work® India, in collaboration with HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company, hosted an event wherein Corporate India leaders pledged their commitment to wellbeing and driving the movement of Making India a Healthy Place to Work for All. It saw more than 250 delegates in attendance and featured notable speakers including subject matter experts in deliberations on health and wellness, including Mr. C.K. Mishra IAS (Retd.), Dr. Sanjay Arora, Ms. Shweta Shalini, Ms. Arushi Sethi, Ms. Khyati Rupani, Ms. Yeshasvini Ramaswamy and Mr. Anuj Tyagi.

The Workplace Wellness Index™ report released during the event presented findings based on a survey representing the voice of 8.94 million employees from 18 industries, making it the most comprehensive study on workplace wellness in the country. The research showed that organizations that focused on wellbeing had a significant impact on reducing burnout in their organization. Only 15% of employees experience burnout in companies in the top quartile as compared to 39% in the bottom quartile.

The data on Wellbeing IndicatorTM demonstrate differentiated trends on Resilience and Fitness Index whereas similar trends are observed on Social Index across all age cohorts. Gen X and Millennials value fitness, while Gen Z values resilience the most. Interestingly, post the Covid 19 pandemic social networking and connectedness was valued the least across all generations.

Speaking about the purpose behind this event, Yeshasvini Ramaswamy, CEO, Great Place To Work India, said, “Health and Wellness in workplaces have become increasingly important, especially in countries like India where the overall wellness score is low, and mental health challenges continue to be a growing concern. According to the National Mental Health Survey of India, only one in ten people with mental health challenges receive adequate treatment, highlighting the need for companies to prioritize employee well-being in the absence of suitable societal infrastructure, especially with hybrid work environments becoming a more pronounced feature of the corporate world. A proactive way to address this maybe, is to look at allocating meaningful budgets under the provisions of our CSR laws and contributing significantly to community health centers around our country.”

She added her views on the insights derived at the launch, “The gap between companies that prioritize workplace culture and those that don’t is a staggering 14%. This point is emphasized even further in our India’s Best Workplaces™ in Health and Wellness 2022 report, which reveals that organizations committed to promoting employee wellbeing have witnessed a remarkable 4% surge in their Workplace Wellness Index™ scores since 2021. Furthermore, workplace wellness is inversely proportionate to employee burnout, as top quartile companies with increased workplace wellness saw a decrease in burnout, while bottom quartile companies with decreased workplace wellness saw an increase in burnout.”

The event also recognized India’s Best Workplaces in Health & Wellness 2022. On the occasion, Yeshasvini shared“Congratulations to all our winners on achieving this recognition and committing to compassionate capitalism. I have huge faith that the industry and its leadership will continue to establish international standards in the space of managing workplace culture. India has a lot to offer to the world.”

Well-being is a business imperative and non-negotiable for individuals and organizations, especially as India grows to become a trillion-dollar economy.  80% of employees at the best workplaces feel like they can work at their current job for a longer period and are willing to put in extra effort to complete their tasks than 74% of employees at the other workplaces. The key differentiator for Best Workplaces includes the role that leaders play in role modelling the right behaviors and institutionalizing a culture of holistic wellbeing.
