Mr. Rituparna Mandal, General Manager, MediaTek Bengaluru talks about  key technology trends that will drive the 5G adoption in India

  1. What are some of the advancements MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ brings to smartphones over previous generations?

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ series redefines the entire flagship 5G smartphone experience taking it to a whole new level of incredible performance. Dimensity 9000+ is powered by several cutting-edge technologies including the 4nm octa-core processor, which was first introduced in the industry by MediaTek in the earlier release, Dimensity 9000.  With an industry leading CPU and graphics, the Dimensity 9000+ is the fastest ever chipset from MediaTek delivering superior speed and maximum power gains. The latest ultra-Cortex-X2 core enables the Dimensity 9000+ delivers up to 3.2GHz, a new record in the Dimensity series and is a major upgrade in MediaTek’s top-of-the-line 5G smartphone chipsets capable of delivering incredible photography, videography and performance.

With the fastest ever Arm Mali-G710 MC10 graphics processor and further increase in peak clock speeds of the CPU and graphics engine, the new Dimensity 9000+ surpasses all previous chipsets promising major improvements in gaming experience and streaming. Overall, the new architecture delivers more than a 5% boost in CPU performance and more than 10% improvement in GPU performance.

The MediaTek APU 590 addresses the latest AI trends, capable of delivering Maximum Effective Performance in AI-multimedia, -gaming, -camera, and social video experiences. With this, devices powered by Dimensity 9000+ can support even the most challenging AI-enhanced technologies, continually used all day, in all conditions. As with other flagship products, Dimensity 9000+ is powered by MediaTek’s industry-leading technologies like MediaTek Imagiq 790, MiraVision 790, integrated 5G modem with 3CC Carrier Aggregation (300MHz), and more.

  1. 2022 will see more 5G-ready devices in India. What are some of the new products we can see from MediaTek?

With 5G, the barrier of speed and latency almost disappears, making devices more powerful and productive. Thus, alongside the launch of 5G in India, we expect rapid proliferation of smarter devices across segments like smart home, smart healthcare, home surveillance, robotics, asset monitoring, automotive components, gaming, etc.

MediaTek portfolio includes smartphones, voice assistant devices (VADs), networking devices, smart home components, Chromebook, automotive and IoT devices. Our R&D team is working on every segment, trying to bring the latest technology innovations to customers. With MediaTek’s advanced chip solutions, OEMs/ODMs will be able to incorporate the latest trends like IoT, Edge, AR/VR, cloud gaming to their devices. Through MediaTek Dimensity 5G Open Resource Architecture (DORA), OEMs can further customize their designs, making their products stand out.

The integration of high-end chip technologies delivers increased CPU/GPU performance; support a wide range of futuristic AI applications; higher HDR photography & videography; and upto 3X 44% lower latency connections across WiFi even in heavily congested networking environments.

  1. What are some of the key technology trends that will drive the 5G adoption in India?

Over the past couple of years, we witnessed high levels of dynamics in digital technology domain mainly for two reasons. First, the rapid surge in the use of mobile broadband powered by 4G and the anticipated transition to 5G had already carried the trends like social media, streaming, gaming, AR/VR, ecommerce, banking, education, and healthcare in the forward direction. The changing consumer demands post pandemic have further accelerated this transformation, making digital technologies popular among the mass. Now, as we approach the end of the pandemic era, there is no going back; rather we expect the momentum to continue.

Currently India has over 750 million smartphone users. Surprisingly, 5G enabled smartphone’s sales penetration touched 51% at the start of this year, surpassing the penetration of 4G smartphones (Counterpoint report). Deloitte report says India will have 1 billion smartphone users by 2026. All these figures translate into brilliant opportunity for 5G in India across a wide range of consumer applications as listed above. India, such a big country with over 65% of the population comprising the youth, can largely benefit from 5G and the associated technologies. We see greater prospects with 5G, as Indicated by Hon’ble Prime Minister recently wherein he stated that 5G will boost India’s economy by $450 billion in 15 years.

  1. The millennial is increasingly using the smartphone for gaming, social media or work-related activities. What are the most important features that drive the demand?

The millennials are aptly called digital natives and according to industry reports the Indian Gen Z spends on an average eight hours per day online. The latest innovations around chipset technologies have greatly helped in driving the demand for high-end gaming, streaming, video conferencing and new applications like metaverse. The Helio series released during 2015 had 28nm which progressed to 12 nm towards 2020; and the RAM ranged from 933 MHz LPDDR3 (7.4 GB/sec) to dual-channel LPDDR4x @ 1866 MHz. Come Dimensity 9000 5G series released just two years later, we are on 4nm N4 fab and 4x 16-bit LPDDR5 @ 3200 MHz (51.2 GB/s) and LPDDR5x @ 3750 MHz (60.0 GB/s).

Similarly, there are significant improvements in graphics processor capabilities and other key ingredients like the camera technologies, game engine, AI processing units (APU), and wireless connectivity enhancements. Technology advancements from voice assistants to biometric double authentication and from 4K HDR camera to highest refresh rates, the new chipsets are all set to address demands of the new-age customer.

  1. MediaTek is leader in the smart devices segment. Which are some of the newer technology solutions powering this experience?
