In the last few years there have been numerous developments involving Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), and the ways in which both are being used are constantly expanding. On the video editing front software and tech giants have been heavily investing in AI and ML, and as a result it has fueled a wide range of innovations.
Curating and Cutting Videos
Several years ago IBM made headlines when it created a movie trailer using its Watson supercomputer. Using ML, Watson ‘learned’ from other movie trailers and subsequently curated and identified video footage that could be used in the trailer for the horror film, Morgan.
Since then AI and ML have been used frequently to curate videos for editing. Recently Google released its Clips camera that uses AI to automatically record short video clips that it thinks will be interesting. Over time the Clips camera will gradually ‘learn’ and improve the video clips it records based on the users’ preferences.
A more comprehensive use of AI to curate and cut videos was researched by Stanford University. Not only would their editor select clips to create videos, but it could also cut them together in a variety of different style – simplifying the task of compiling videos significantly.
Intelligent Editing Tools
Another way in which AI and ML are being used to innovate video editing is in the form of more intelligent editing tools. Already many editors use algorithms to automate certain tools, and AI can improve upon that further.
Overall AI and ML can help create more intelligent editing tools by better recognizing the content of a video, and proceeding to edit it more effectively. Some of the intelligent editing tools may include automated cropping, color balancing, audio processing, and so on.
While each video editor has a different approach and its own set of intelligent editing tools, some have taken a different approach. For example in Movavi Video Editor Plus the Montage Wizard uses a type of AI to help quickly produce a video with music from clips and images that are added.
Computer Generated Imagery (CGI)
For years CGI has been a part and parcel of many Hollywood blockbusters, and AI is able to improve on it further by making the imagery look more realistic. It is able to do that in numerous ways, and is already heavily in use within most modern CGI.
One of the most popular ways in which AI is being used in conjunction with CGI is on Snapchat. The platforms ‘face swaps’ and ‘face filters’ lean on ML and AI to produce accurate effects.
However that is just the tip of the iceberg, and there are numerous projects aimed at creating realistic digital backgrounds or full-fledged digital characters. By using AI and ML the CGI that is generated can be more complex and realistic, while requiring a fraction of the time that a human would take to produce the same.
While AI and ML are far from being able to fully create or edit videos from scratch, the innovations that they have already produced can help make editing easier and more effective. For professional videographers and editors AI and ML can help reduce the work required to edit videos, and for beginners it can make editing videos easier and eliminate the learning curve.
At some point in the future maybe AI will be able to create its own video with digital characters and backgrounds that it edits itself – but it is still quite a ways away from being able to do that.
