Amazon Web Services (AWS) is leading the cloud business globally as well as in India with a run rate of $22 billion per year. With the fast adoption of its cloud services that ranges across startups, SMBs, large enterprises, government and education institutions, AWS continues to bet big on the India market, aiming to bring greater innovation and more enriched experiences to its customers and partners.
“Cloud is the new normal. We are witnessing adoption of AWS across the board with different kinds of workloads,” said Bikram Singh Bedi, Head of India Business, at the Annual AWS Summit held in Mumbai on May 10, 2018 that aims to reach out to new and existing users of cloud. The objective was to educate the market about cloud in general and AWS. The summit witnessed a footfall of over 4000 delegates and personalities and was attended by developers and business leaders from across verticals, reflecting the tremendous momentum in the acceptance and adoption of AWS cloud.
“India is a very important market to AWS, growing at a very rapid pace with over hundreds of thousands of active customers,” Bedi said adding that AWS customers in India received a significant boost with the launch of the datacenters in the country, registering over 50 percent growth.
Olivier Klein, Head of Emerging Technologies, Asia-Pacific, revealed at his keynote how AWS is making it easier for organizations of all sizes to grow and succeed by leveraging emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML), Alexa, IoT, Migration, Big Data and cloud architecture.
Klein also called upon experts and business leaders of various enterprises on stage to share insights and success stories on these deployments. For example, Siddharth Sharma, CTO Shaadi.com explained how the company migrated from a private hosted cloud to AWS so it could focus on its core business, reduce costs, and gain the agility to develop better user experiences faster. Shaadi.com is one of the world’s largest online matchmaking services, helping people around the world meet their life partners through a curated database of verified profiles.The company uses Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3 as a foundation for its services, relies on Amazon ElastiCache for in-memory storage, and adopted Amazon Rekognition for automated profile-picture management.
Subrat Mohanty, COO, HDFC Standard Life Insurance said the company created the data platform on AWS Cloud to facilitate an agile and a responsive solution to deliver a frictionless on-boarding experience to customers. “Our objective is to enable customers make an informed decision and simplify the buying journey for them. Our digital platform Atom, powered by AWS Cloud, enables us to give customers a superior digital experience by helping them understand the benefits of life insurance and getting them started on their purchasing journeys. As a solution provider, AWS has provided us a platform that is complete, enterprise-ready, and meets the regulatory requirement of data security.,” he said.
Likewise, Sudhir Bangarambandi, CTO, Indus OS, explained AWS’ vital role in shaping the startup become successful in the Indian smartphone operating system space.Indus OS launched its first device in in May 2015 and became the second most preferred OS in India, after Android, surpassing Microsoft’s Windows and Apple’s iOS.
Tracing the dramatic growth of AWS’ business in India, Chandra Sankholkar, GM of Amazon Internet Services, said, “We launched our AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region in June 2016 and we have seen tremendous growth in the number of customers since then.
