Job Market Sees Rise in Demand for Store Managers

Indeed, the world’s #1 job site today revealed data around retail jobs in India in the pre and post-pandemic era.

According to the data, from April 2019-2023, overall demand slipped by almost 17%. In the early dawn of the covid-19 pandemic from April 2019 to 2020, brick-and-mortar stores received negligible footfall, causing demand to drop by 36%. As traditional retail stores grappled with this turbulence, the industry continued to face a double-digit downturn in both demand, and supply for retail jobs. However, as the dust began to settle in the following year, there was a significant surge of 46% rise in job postings from April 2021-22. Job seeker interest too shot up by a massive 52%. Retailers geared up for in-person end-of-season sales, phygital stores were on the rise, and the need for skilled store managers intensified.

More recently, there seems to be a talent mismatch in the availability and interest for store managers as demand increased by 6% from April 2022-2023.

The top cities receiving the highest job seeker interest for store manager roles were Delhi (11.15%), Bengaluru (8%), and Mumbai (7%).

Commenting on the research report, Rohan Sylvester, Talent Strategy Advisor, Indeed said: “The Indian retail industry has undergone a remarkable transformation. As middle-class income families experience increased purchasing power, many continue to favor the social aspect of in-store shopping with loved ones. Retailers need store managers to help manage workload during end-of-season sales.”

Many tier 2 cities are investing in infrastructure to build several grade-A malls and large shopping centers, as population returns to these cities. Currently, cities such as Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Coimbatore are projecting a combined interest for store manager jobs, nearly 12% on Indeed’s platform.
